This Ain’t Your Diddy’s NASCAR

“They oughta fine that son of a bitch and suspend him the rest of the year, I say.” Strong words issued by a man in a late season championship hunt after being taken out while leading the race by someone out of the championship picture. If you guessed those were Joey Logano’s words following this week’s Martinsville race, you’d be completely wrong. No, those were the words of Dale Earnhardt, following the Fall 1989 North Wilkesboro race, after he and Ricky Rudd got tangled up in a “quintessential” NASCAR moment.1  I didn’t have to look up that quote, it sticks out in my memory, among the many former great moments of a former great sport. Cable TV was still fairly new, so hearing Dale saying a cuss word on TV was a pretty big deal for me. It was my Steve Harvey’s Sister Odell moment. I don’t think I’ve missed a Cup race since.

Local college will not change Joos name, mascot

SUFFOLK-Suffolk State University president Jenn Tyle reiterated Wednesday her long-held insistence that she won’t change the University’s “Joo” mascot, in the face of criticism from anyone that’s remotely Jewish or anyone who may find it offensive.

“I respect the opinions of those who disagree,” Tyle wrote in a letter to students, faculty and alumni.  “But we cannot ignore our 100 year history, or the strong feelings of most of our alumni base throughout the country.  After 100 years, the team name ‘Joos’ continues to hold the memories and meaning of where we came from, who we are, and who we want to be in the years to come.”

SHS Lady Indians Honor Longtime Fan

Over the years, the Southampton Volleyball team has seen players and coaches come and go. One constant that has remained the same, however, is one man. Chester Hardy has been attending Girls Volleyball matches ever since he can remember. Win or lose, Mr. Hardy can always be seen in his own section for every game wearing his “lucky” brown trench coat, always in his now famous pose of having his hands thrust deeply into his pants’ pockets at all times. Known for his intensity during the games, other fans have learned to allow him his own section to himself. “He just gets really excited when the girls come out” Coach Sue Phyllis said.
