Hurricane Sandy claims infamous “Honeyhole” tree

Honeyhole

SEDLEY — Hurricane Sandy has blown away a Southampton County landmark.

A 70-year-old oak tree with a conspicuous opening, nicknamed the “Honeyhole” tree, was felled by Sandy’s tropical storm force winds.

An infamous tree, the “Honeyhole” tree was used by many desperate men who had either been in a recent romantic dry spell, or were just feeling randy. The tree boasted visitors from as far away as New Zealand. Quite a few times, passersby would snap photographs of locals having at the tree. This all seemed to be in good fun before the advent of Facebook, with the noted press resulting in Sedley being named the Tree Hugging capital of the world .

“It was kind of a pick-me-up for the day,” said one local frequenter of the “Honeyhole. “My whole family has been visiting the “Honeyhole” for generations. It’s like losing a family member. I still remember when my Grandaddy took me out to see the “Honeyhole” when I was 17 and told me all about the birds, the bees, and the trees. I got my first splinter that day. What makes it even worse though, , after I heard the tree had fallen, I noticed that someone cut out the special part of the tree. Heartless bastards.”

“I can’t tell you how many people had a special memory they’ll never forget there over the years,” said Sedley mayor C.D. Lee. “Why that’s where (a lot of people) take their midnight rides. I’m not sure what the men folk are gonna do now for fun.”
Memorial services for the “Honeyhole” tree are planned for next week.
